Food, Dining & Nightlife
Opelousas isn’t called the Spice Capital of Louisiana for nothing! Nestled in the heart of Cajun Country, the city is famous for its contributions to the culinary world and to kitchen pantries all across the globe. See where spice legend Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning is made, where Lou Ana Cooking Oil is produced, learn how to mix your own spices at Targil Seasoning, Inc. or stop by Savoie’s Sausage Grocery, an Opelousas institution since World War II, and taste real Cajun smoked sausage, tasso and other Cajun delights. In a hurry? Try the original “fast food combo” such as boudin, cracklins and hog’s head cheese from one of our meat markets and locally owned grocery stores.
Dine where internationally-famous chefs Paul Prudhomme and Tony Chachere learned their culinary secrets and discover why our Cajun and Creole dishes are second to none. Our culinary heritage is centuries old and is derived from the French, Spanish, African and Native Americans. Crawfish étouffée and bisque, jambalaya, shrimp Creole and gumbo are commonly served up at local restaurants. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some of Opelousas’ famous Soul Food dishes, such as smothered pork chops, collard greens and corn bread. Don’t forget the dessert! Sweet potato pie, blackberry cobbler and bread pudding are a must.
Spice up your adventure with some new dance moves! You can learn the Cajun two-step or a lively Zydeco side-step. Opelousas, and the surrounding area, have an abundance of music and live entertainment venues. Legendary Slim’s Y-Ki-Ki is famous for its live Zydeco music and dances. Or, head west of Opelousas on U.S. Highway 190 to the Zydeco Hall of Fame formerly Richard's Club for a taste of a rural Zydeco dance hall.
Live concerts are held year-‘round in Opelousas. From big name entertainers representing every musical genre performing at Evangeline Downs Racetrack, Casino and Hotel’s Events Center to local French, Cajun, Zydeco, Swamp Pop, R&B and Country bands at the Music & Market series held every spring and fall.
